Once again I woke up to 2 inches of snow on the ground. By 7:30am the warmth of the sun began to melt it. I tried to capture the flakes of snow as they got blown by the wind off the tree branches. The silence broken by the water flowing downstream and occasionally by the sound of an airplane was recorded with the images of the open spaces in the woods. I failed to catch a glimpse of the deer which roam around all day and night in these woods.

Artisans D’Ankor Arts and Crafts
If shopping for silk products, I recommend Artisans d’Angkor. We visited them at the Silk Farm, where they have a store filled with elegant products of silk, including comforter covers with starting prices of $200.

You can make the trip to the Silk Farm in Puok, which is 16 miles from Siem Reap (855)63 399 064, visit the main shop at Slung Thmey street in Siem Reap (855) 63 963 330, or wait until you are at the airport and shop before your flight departs. The catalog on their website does not show all the products that you can find at the stores, but it will give you an idea of the prices you should expect to pay.

ANGKOR WAT

Angkor Wat Archaeological Park
Siem Reap, Cambodia
February 2009

Angkor Wat Temple Complex

This is a must. Purchase your two or three day passes, they are worthwhile. Dress for HOT weather, bring your bottles of water – I ended up drinking Coca Cola to help digest the different spices in the food. The tuk-tuk rides are bumpy and dusty. I covered my hair and nose and mouth with a scarf to keep the dust out. Taxis are available if the tuk-tuk ride gets to be too much for you, or if you want to get to your destinations faster.

Take cash if you want to purchase crafts, books or food and beverages at the entrance of the different Temple Complexes.

Clicking on the images below will take you to more photos on my http://flickr.com/photos/deaixa.

Ta Prohm Temple
This is one of the most unique archaeological sites! The pictures cannot capture the experience. We went there in the afternoon and were the last ones to leave. It was almost spooky to be there at sunset because of the opacity of the ruins covered with overgrown vegetation.

Apparently, in order to even reach the buildings, the archaeologists had to set on fire the overgrown vegetation. In spite of that the gigantic trees are still alive. When the trees die, the roots are uprooted and so are the buildings under them. This set of Temples have been left “untouched” so that visitors can better appreciate the work that has been done to preserve Angkor Wat.

Angkor Thom (Preah Khan)Temple

Louis Delaporte led a French expedition to Cambodia in the 1870’s. He presented his findings in a book, “Southeast Asia Visions”, which is available online at the Cornell Digital Library site. He also took back to Paris a selected number of sculptures from Angkor Thom, which are now on display at the Guimet Museum.

I had the opportunity to visit Angkor Thom and the Guimet Museum within a few weeks from each other. Cambodia in February, Paris in late March. The two go hand in hand. I came to the conclusion that the bodies are in Cambodia and the heads are in Paris – referring to the sculptures.

Sunset at Bakheng Hill

In addition to Sunset Watching from a Balloon, the “Sundowner” at Bakheng Hill is very popular. To get there, you need to walk about 10 to 15 minutes uphill before you get to the bottom of the pyramid.

Sunset at Bakheng Hill

WAT THMEI

Also known as The Killing Fields, soon to be renamed as Wat Tep Pothivong.

This is a must see, if you want to learn more about Cambodia’s History, outside of the Angkor Wat ruins.
The Temple Complex has a cementery where victims of the Khmer Rouge- Pol Pot regime are buried.

The Pol Pot regime is said to have come to power mainly as a result of the devastation caused by the US bombing campaign of Cambodia which took place during Richard Nixon’s administration. Supposedly the agent orange and bombs that were dropped in Cambodia in order to deter the Vietnamese from traveling in Cambodia, caused such destruction that people voted the Communists into power to kick the Western powers out of the country. The genocide that occurred as a consequence of Pol Pot’s Communist rule can be better understood by visiting Wat Thmei.

I recommend that you contact Mr. Yan Yin in advance and ask him to give you a tour of the complex .-The visit does not take more than 15 minutes. Accross the street is the Restaurant at Pavillon Indochine. Just a couple blocks away is a school for orphans, where Mr. Yan Yin teaches.

Wat Thmei - The Temple

The roof of the old temple is under reconstruction. It appears to be the same that Louis Delaporte documented during his expedition in the 1870’s: digital.library.cornell.edu/cgi/t/text/pageviewer-idx?c=s…

Pavillon Indochine Hotel and Restaurant

Jean Comaille Road
across the street from Wat Thmei

I recommend a stop at the Pavillon for lunch or perhaps if there is not enough time, for quick refreshments.
The pizzas are excellent and very worth the visit, especially if you are in the mood for some familiar foods.

I found these posters by Vietnamese artists at a Gallery in the Silom Galleria Shopping Center, Bangkok, Thailand.
The same gallery had an exhibit works by Mai Van Nam as well as of wood printed work of 10 most well know Vietnamese artists from the Fine Arts College of Indochina 1942. Included among these was a sketch book by Ton Duc Luong. I copy some photos of the art here because they are not easy to find via “google”.

The Bangkok Post is a great place to find “What’s On Real.Time” in Bangkok. It was through this newspaper that I found my way to the Art Exhibitions in the Silom Galleria Shopping Center. Several Art Galleries of contemporary art, as well as some studios of contemporary artists can be found on the first level (basement).

I share the images of some of the paintings on exhibit simply because they are difficult to find on the web while doing searches using our alphabet.

The following text is from the blog of John Irvin http://www.geocities.com/~johni32/art04.html

“Charoon grew up wanting to make art. As a boy in his small village in Singburi, he remembers drawing pictures in the dirt, when he was 5 years old. At the time he had no materials to draw with. He used to like to watch Leekay drama, a Thai art form which has costumes and painted backgrounds. In high school, his goal was to be a scenery painter for these shows. His interest in painting scenery became transformed into a career as a fine artist, specializing in landscapes. “I never reached my goal of being a scenery painter,” he laughs.

“He went to Silpakorn University in Bangkok, and afterward came to Chiang Mai to do his graduate study. It was here, at a friend’s pond, that he discovered the joy of painting flowers, in all their vivid color. ”

“I used to use dark colors, lots of browns,” Charoon said to me. “I didn’t think I could paint in bright colors.” But, when painting the lily pads in his friend’s pond, Charoon found brightly colored flowers mixed in with the darker colors. Being a good student, he reproduced what he saw accurately, and in the process the color seeped into his work. He found very quickly that he liked using bright colors.

“Painting dark colors used to make the sadness come out from me,” he told me. “Now, when I paint, I feel more happy.”

“Charoon admires the French impressionists of the 19th century, including Monet. These artists emphasized the use of color very strongly in their work, even favoring it over compositional elements like form and line. Monet in particular painted many studies of flowers and fields in which the forms of objects almost seemed to disintegrate into fields of color. Charoon owns many books on Monet, and has been to France to study his work in person. Viewing Charoon’s work, one can easily feel his admiration for Monet.”

I have started to take photos of people. These are some of my favorites. What caught my attention was the uniformity of the hats and t-shirts worn by the tourists traveling in groups, probably to avoid getting lost from their group. The people of Siem Reap caught my attention because of their habits and customs which are so different from mine.

Febrero 2009

I took these videos of the victims of land mines Orchestra in the grounds of the Banteayrey Temple. They perform traditional Khmer music for the tourists visiting the ruins. They sell their CDs for $10 to earn their living. It is a lot for a CD in Cambodia but it goes to a good cause. I bought one thinking it would be an audio CD. It turned out to be a video of them playing and also of images of the bas-reliefs in the temple.

Bangkok, Tailandia.
Febrero 2009

Even the monks shop at Pantip Mall in Bangkok !

A multistory shopping mall,Pantip Plaza consists of hundreds of small retailers of only computer and computer products. A paradise for those of us who love cameras, cellphones, music, movies, DVDs and all kinds of electronic gadgets. The shopping experience is fascinating not only because of the merchandise, but because of the multitude of shoppers who share your love for the gadgets and the openness of the mall design. Window shopping a new twist when a tv screen becomes a mirror that adds a crown over your head, and follows you while you “dance” to the music playing in the backround.

Last tuesday was Obama Day in D.C. For that reason we took the Marc and got to Union Station at 10:00am. We walked towards the Mall, in order to participate with the thousands of other partisans, only to find that the Mall had a wire fence surrounding it. All the entrances where security had been set up, were already closed.

We stood with the rest of the “locked out” at noon with only a radio to keep us in the “know”. It was quite a sobering experience, and very different from the images that were broadcast by the major news conglomerates to the rest of the world.

I hope you appreciate my photo/video journalism. I am sharing with you what I consider my best recording of this important event below.

December 2008.

I wish everyone of you a very Merry Christmas / A todos meus amigos: Feliz Natal!

/A few days ago, just as I was getting ready to head for the subway back to my hotel room on 58th Street in Manhattan, I ran into this rendition of a Xmas favorite. The young man definitely set the tone for me.

Back at home when I was able to replay it, I could not help but notice the contrast with the streets in Dublin, where the tourists, like me gathered around the street musicians. His was no longer a solitude in New York City as I stopped to listen to him, while doing shopping on my own, alone, and neither was mine.

I copy below from http://carols.org, a comment about the song, and the lyrics. You are welcome to sing along! Convido vocês a cantar!

The heart warming Christmas song Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas was immortalised by Judy Garland when she sang this song to Margaret O’Brien and brought tears to the eyes of the audience. The lyricist for Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas was Ralph Blane and the haunting music was composed by Hugh Martin. The song Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas was first published in 1943. The title of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas is undoubtedly one of the saddest Christmas songs of the century.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
our troubles will be out of sight

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.

Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

I give you as a gift, these images of Rockefeller Center’s Christmas Tree.

Arizona Governor Bill Richardson

La Charla., originally uploaded by deaixa.

I recorded some video footage at Tuesday night’s Candlelight Vigil and
cut it into a 90 second clip in the middle of the night in honor of the
victims. You can view that by clicking to HERE.
Many were unable to view this clip on Wednesday while it had too many
hits to handle since the VT site and other sites linked to it, but it
should be working today.

Thanks, once again, for everyone’s support. It is truly appreciated.
“This is a tragedy in American history. So for today, forget any and
all of your college affiliations. For today, we are all Hokies.”

professional Ashtanga Yoga teacher.(registered with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 500 – the highest level – Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher).

My goal is to help my students find their inner teacher and commit to a daily practice which brings them joy and freedom physically, spiritually, and energetically.

“To that end, I use the methods taught by Sri Pattabhi Jois of South India as the starting point and adapt them to each individual’s level of ability. I do my best not to take myself too seriously; if I get too full of it, the universe has a way of deflating it pretty quickly and on a regular basis, too. for all of the emails and phone calls, everyone. These events have been
deeply saddening, but I’m physically ok. I was safely locked in a
classroom for most of the day Monday during the shootings. My deepest
sympathies go out to the families and friends of all the victims.I recorded some video footage at Tuesday night’s Candlelight Vigil and
cut it into a 90 second clip in the middle of the night in honor of the
victims. You can view that by clicking to HERE.
Many were unable to view this clip on Wednesday while it had too many
hits to handle since the VT site and other sites linked to it, but it
should be working today.

Thanks, once again, for everyone’s support. It is truly appreciated.

Cambefort y Boza is a Panamanian architectural firm that has met with enormous success since it first opened its doors for business in 1983. Our firm comprises a group of professionals who offer a great variety of specialized architectural services, such as designing residential property, vacation/resort developments, and apartment, commercial, corporate and institutional buildings, including, but not limited to, remodeling and interior design services.

We devote all of our efforts and expertise to the development of each and every new project for which our firm is hired – no matter how big or small that project may be. Each design project has its own artistic and technical features, since we devote a great deal of time and energy to the site and its surroundings, including all the details these entail, always with a keen eye to the conservation of the environment. In order to do this, we have project design and construction specialists with access to state-of-the-art technology in architectural computer and visualization fields.

Our Firm serves clients in Panama for the most part, but it has also provided services to overseas clients, in countries such as Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Peru and Australia. Cambefort y Boza has been the proud recipient of several awards and acknowledgments from S.P.I.A. (Sociedad Panameña de Ingenieros y Arquitectos de Panamá – Panamanian Association of Engineers and Architects) for several design projects, and it received the 2005 Excelsa Award from the Colegio de Arquitectos de Panamá 2005 (2005 Association of Architects of Panama) for its design of the Punta Caracol residential house, described as the best architectural project of the year. Cambefort y Boza is an active member of the Sociedad Panameña de Ingenieros y Arquitectos (S.P.I.A.), the American Society of Interior Design (A.S.I.D.), the Asociación Panameña de Corredores y Promotores de Bienes Raíces (ACOBIR) (Panamanian Association of Real Estate Brokers and Developers), and the Instituto Panameño de Arquitectura y Urbanismo (IPAUR) (Panamanian Institute of Architecture and City Planning).
